Late Night on Lloyd Street: The Story of Alan Schafer: Complicating the Jewish Southerner
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Jewish Museum of Maryland
15 Lloyd St
Baltimore, MD 21202
At this month’s Late Night on Lloyd Street, hear the story of Alan Schafer, a Baltimore-born Jew who led a fascinating life and left an outrageous legacy in the form of South of the Border—a famous tourist complex—and its iconic, record-breaking sombrero. As with all Late Nights, there will be plenty of beer, wine, snacks and conversation. Nicole King, author of Sombreros and Motorcycles in a Newer South: The Politics of Aesthetics in South Carolinas Tourism Industry, will be on hand to tell us about Alan Schafer and the significance of his legacy, including how he came to create both South of the Border and Confederateland. Generously supported by the Grandchildren of Harvey M. and Lyn P. Meyerhoff Philanthropic Fund. For more information, call Trillion Attwood at 410-732-6402 x215 or email tattwood@jewishmuseummd.org.
