Description

Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Hebrew Congregation will hold its First Annual Shofar-Blowing Contest on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at 7:30 pm at the synagogue. The purpose of the event, run by spiritual leader Rabbi Yerachmiel Shapiro, is to raise awareness as Jews prepare for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar ΓΆ€“ and just for fun. There is no entrance fee, and the public is invited to enter. The four categories of competition will be the loudest, longest, most creative, and best traditional shofar blows. Shofars will be provided, but if you have your own, you are welcome to use it. Prizes will be awarded and light refreshments will be served. Traditionally, the shofar, made from the horn of an animal, is used primarily in Jewish rituals, especially on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Hearing the shofar fulfills a commandment. Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Hebrew Congregation, 7000 Rockland Hills Drive, is a Modern Orthodox synagogue, celebrating its 123rd anniversary. It has a long and respected history of service and charity in the Greater Baltimore area. For information, please contact Rabbi Shapiro at 410-653-7485 or rabbishapiro@mmae.org.
