The onslaught begins. The Almighty unleashes a series of ten plagues that will reveal to a world that has descended to darkness, the truth of His mastery of the universe. Theses ten plagues correspond to the ten utterances the world was created with, since its intent is to restore this absolute truth. A perfect world that began its descent as a result of the first sin committed by Adam and Chava, followed in suit by the faulty generations of the flood, deluge and denizens of Sodom and Amorah, would now revive through the Children of Israel, the beloved descendants of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, who would bear the original mission of Man by leaving Egypt and journey to Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, and the full Torah embodied within it, that would express G-d’s origi...

Rising suicide rates and depression in U.S. teens and young adults have prompted researchers to ask a provocative question: Could the same devices that some people blame for contributing to tech-age angst also be used to detect it?
The idea has sparked a race to develop apps that warn of impending mental health crises. Call it smartphone psychiatry or child psychology 2.0.
Studies have linked heavy smartphone use with worsening teen mental health. But as teens scroll through Instagram and Snapchat, tap out texts or watch YouTube videos, they also leave digital footprints that might offer clues to their psychological well-being.
Changes in typing speed, voice tone, word choice and how often kids stay home could signal trouble, according to preliminary studies.
There might be as many as ...

Baltimore, MD - Jan. 3, 2019 - As we come up to the first yahrzeit of Chaiya Drabkin, a'h, co-founder of the Jewish Caring Network (JCN), all of us who knew Chaiya, and all of us who benefited from the incredible work of JCN, are filled with emotion.
We are still bereaved, mourning the loss of her glowing presence in our midst, the unstoppable optimism and simchas hachaim (joy) which remained until the end, the devotion to chesed (kindness) that could not be deterred by any circumstance, not even the circumstance of her own devastating illness.
And yet we cannot help but remember the middah (character trait) that she embodied — simcha (happiness)— and smile at the warmth and joy of the memories she left us. Whatever Chaiya did, she did with simcha. Whether it was plantin...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Cheering Democrats returned Nancy Pelosi to the House speaker’s post Thursday as the 116th Congress took office and ushered in a historically diverse class of freshmen ready to confront President Donald Trump in a new era of divided government.
Trump congratulated Pelosi during a rare appearance in the White House briefing room.
The president, who has tangled with Pelosi and is sure to do so again, called her election by House colleagues “a tremendous, tremendous achievement.”
Pelosi, elected speaker 220-192, took the gavel saying U.S. voters “demanded a new dawn” in the November election and are looking to “the beauty of our Constitution” to provide checks and balances on power. She invited scores of lawmakers’ kid...

Many poskim and communal leaders have asked me whether parents are obligated to inoculate their children by means of generally accepted vaccines in order to prevent terrible diseases, because some important rabbanim recently expressed the following opinion: Since there is concern that vaccination damages health, not only is it permissible not to vaccinate children, but it is even recommended not to vaccinate them.
In my humble opinion, this is an error. Rather, parents obviously have an obligation to vaccinate their children, and I have ruled that it is even permissible for parents to organize themselves in order to force educational institutions not to accept unvaccinated pupils. I will explain my thinking and my reasoning.

Shares of Apple cratered nearly 8 percent in extended trading Wednesday — knocking some $50 billion off the market cap after the company took the unusual step of cutting its revenue guidance.
In a letter to investors, Cook said that Apple expects to report $84 billion in revenue during its next earnings report — it previously forecasted $91 billion.
Cook placed the blame on “both macroeconomic and Apple-specific factors,” and said that the iPhone maker failed to “foresee the magnitude of the economic deceleration” in emerging markets. Cook said that “over 100 percent” of Apple’s worldwide revenue decline “occurred in Greater China across iPhone, Mac and iPad.” He also cited the reduced prices for battery replacements causi...

Moscow - A former U.S. Marine detained in Russia has been charged with espionage, the Interfax news agency said on Thursday, meaning he could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Russia’s FSB state security service detained Paul Whelan, 48, in Moscow last Friday on suspicion of spying, in a case which threatens to aggravate diplomatic tensions with the United States.
The FSB opened a criminal case against Whelan but gave no details of his alleged espionage activities.
Interfax said the Russian authorities had brought formal charges against Whelan on Thursday, citing what it described as an informed source. Reuters could not independently verify the Interfax report.
Whelan’s lawyer, Vladimir Zherebenkov, declined to comment on the charges but told Reuters that under t...

New York - Stocks went into a steep slide Thursday after Apple sent a shudder through Wall Street with word that iPhone sales in China are falling.
The rare warning of disappointing results from Apple reinforced investors’ fears that the world’s second-biggest economy is losing steam and that trade tensions between Washington and Beijing are making things worse.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged as much as 660 points at the close of trading.
Apple stock plummeted 9.9 percent, erasing $72 billion in value. Other big exporters, including technology and heavy-machinery companies, also took big losses. Some of the worst drops were at chipmakers that make components used in smartphones and other gadgets.
“For a while now there’s been an adage in the markets th...

Incoming Sen. Mitt Romney on Wednesday said he won’t run for president again, though he warned that President Donald Trump doesn’t necessarily have his support for his 2020 reelection campaign.
“I think it’s early to make that decision and I want to see what the alternatives are,” Romney told CNN’s Jake Tapper about whether he will endorse Trump in 2020.
Asked by Tapper whether he would challenge Trump in 2020, Romney said he would not.
“No. You may have heard, I ran before. I’ve had that experience,” he said, while acknowledging Trump’s point. “And, by the way, I acknowledge the president was successful. And I was not. He did something I couldn’t do. He won. And I recognize that and appreciate that. But no, I&rsquo...

A man bearing two bottles of Crown Royal whiskey as gifts for President Trump entered a restricted area near the White House to seek the commander-in-chief’s help in finding a wife.
The suspect, identified by his Canadian passport as Yianny Georgopoulos, moved a bike rack marked “No trespassing authorized personnel only” and “Restricted area do not enter” about midnight Wednesday, NBC Washington reported, citing court documents.
Georgopoulos told a Secret Service officer he was there to see the president and deliver the booze to him — apparently unaware that Trump famously doesn’t drink alcohol. Georgopoulos also said he had traveled from Canada to speak with Trump because he wanted his help in finding a spouse.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) intends to introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump on Thursday as the new session of Congress convenes.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Sherman’s measure will accuse Trump of obstruction of justice in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey, among other things.
The California Democrat previously filed articles of impeachment on similar grounds in July 2017 and was among the nearly 60 Democrats who voted in favor of launching impeachment proceedings in December 2017. The measure overwhelmingly failed.

CHICAGO (AP) — One of the most powerful City Council members in Chicago history has been charged with attempted extortion for "corruptly soliciting business" for his private law firm, according to a federal complaint unsealed Thursday.
If convicted, Alderman Ed Burke could face up to 20 years in prison. The charge follows November raids of the Democrat's offices at City Hall and in his Southwest Side ward.
Burke's law firm represented the high-rise tower that bears President Donald Trump's name. There's no indication the case is at all tied to his firm's work for Trump.
The 75-year-old is one of the last of the old Chicago machine politicians. He's been on the council for 50 years and has chaired its finance committee for the last three decades.

As of January 1, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley was required to wipe clean her personal Twitter account and start fresh. While she didn't keep her 1.7 million Twitter followers, she did keep her old Twitter banner: a photo of her and a group of religious young women taken during a trip to Jerusalem in June 2017. That November, Haley made the image her "banner" photo on both Twitter and Facebook, and has kept them that way ever since.Haley was sworn in as the UN ambassador in January 2017, and announced in October that she would be resigning, effective December 31, 2018. Until the end of 2018, Haley had been using one Twitter account to conduct both official and unofficial business. That move had been criticized by officials in the past for blurring the lines betwe...
